Members of the Southern Kaduna New Faces, Tuesday, in kaduna took their agitation to the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and elder statesman, Sen. Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi where they issued to the iconic politician, a two-page resolution of the group which contain various demands that bothers on inclusiveness in both the campaign structure of the party’s candidate, Rt. Hon. Isa Mohammed Ashiru and in the structure of the government if it comes to fruition.
Addressing members of the PDP youth-based group, the former governor of the state and senator in Zone 1, said, “In politics people have demands and expectations and your demands and expectations bothers on youth inclusiveness, to be included in both the campaign structure of PDP’s candidate and the government (if it comes to fruition) and for your people to be well-taken care of as it was under the previous PDP government. To me, there is nothing wrong with that, this is a healthy agitation and a legitimate expectation.
He went further to say, as an elder, someone who is interested in the success of PDP mustn’t sit back and allow things to deteriorate. This is why I invited all the people making agitations, to hear firsthand, what are the issues and I found out that there is no problem at all in the agitations and I assure you that our party and our governor to be God’s willing will look into these issues. As a matter of fact, I will facilitate a meeting between your representatives and Isa Ashiru at the appropriate time. This is a matter that can’t be taken lightly now and in the future.
He advised that the group should go and join forces with other passionate members of the party to make sure they bring about positive change in Kaduna State and in the country. He applauds the group for the matured but, energetic way that they did the agitation and urged them to let the momentum that they used in pushing the agitation to go all through the campaign processes, voting process and in protecting votes.
The Chairman Kaduna New Faces, Mr. Tanko Rossi Sabo, said, the reason for the visit is to accord respect to the leader of the party in the state, in person of Senator Ahmed Makarfi. It will be disrespectful to bypass him. This visit, he added, is a stepping stone, we are taking our struggle step-by-step and we intend to take it further until our demands are met. So, this visit shows we are peacemakers and we are deeply interested in the victory of the party. This is contrary to the wrong impression that we are against Ashiru’s running mate, Dr. John Ayuba. However, we are only interested in our political future, period.
For the record, the resolutions issued to Makarfi contains the following demands:
1. 2023 CAMPAIGN STRUCTURES: Youths are the greatest mobilizers and defenders of votes in Kaduna state and Nigeria at large. This is based on multifarious variables like numerical strength, energy and passion. Many studies showed that parties that give youths strategic positions in electoral matters often triumph.
Unfortunately, our party has not reconciled itself with this impeccable reality. Saturating 2015 and 2019 campaign structures with the people that the youths can’t see their future in them. This is why youths gave them cold feet that resulted in usurpation of our mandates in many constituencies and gubernatorial elections.
DEMANDS: Because of our experiences enumerated herein before,we demand for 65% representation in the campaign structures viz at the state, zonal and LGA levels. We demand for the following positions: Chairman, Youth Leader, women leader, Organising secretary, PRO of the campaign structures. Aforementioned offices must include positions to be conceded, willy nilly.
POWER SHARING: In 1999 PDP commenced a power sharing formula in Kaduna state that gave every section and social class a sense of belonging. That setting was eliminated by the APC government in 2015. Its liquidation widened the social and economic gulf in the state. More to it, it collapsed the social bridges that were painstakingly built by three PDP governments in the state.
DEMANDS: Since the governor is from Kaduna North, we demand for the post of Speaker, SSG, Chief of Staff and Head of Service . Again, we demand for the position of the minister and 50/50 percent sharing of other federal appointments coming allocated to Kaduna state. Like in the campaign structures, we demand that 50% of holders of these positions should be youths from Southern Kaduna.
COMMITTEES: Right now, there are many committees working on various matters related to 2023 and allied matters. These committees don’t have a single youth as its member. These committees are mostly septuagenarians and octogenarians. Special wisdom isn’t needed to decipher that their thinking isn’t the best ally of contemporary or realities of the 21st century.
DEMANDS: We demand for inclusion in committees plotting for 2023 elections and post elections power sharing matters. As usual, we feel committees under the leadership of gerontocracy can’t properly capture our aspirations.
CONCLUSION: We are loyal party members with the insatiable aspiration to see our party upstage APC at the state and federal levels. And will do everything humanly possible to see that our desires come to fruition. Nevertheless, we will not participate in our party’s 2023 project if our conditions are not met. Lastly, we are ready and available for negotiations that will lead to actualising our enumerated conditions herein and others that will come up along the way. Thank you.
