Renowned Human Rights Activist and Constitution Lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, said that Governor Nasiru El-rufai of Kaduna State may have Constitutional immunity now but, not immunity from posterity.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria made the submission during a House of Justice network program where he appeared as a guest along with Dr. Tom Adaba, OON the pioneer Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission.
Responding to the question of whether it was justifiable for lawyers to protest the platform that was offered to Elrufai of Kaduna state at the 2020 Nigeria Bar Association Conference, Falana, noted that it was not only justifiable but is the right thing to do. He said he had in same respect written to the NBA platform to withdraw the platform given to Elrufai because he had ‘a penchant for disregarding court orders, pays money to killers, had threaten foreign election observers that they will return in body bags and has made very inciting statements on the killings in Kaduna state.”
Falana decried ‘the short institutional memory’ of legal professionals noting that the protest against Elrufai was ‘ a lesson for public holders who may enjoy constitutional immunity but cannot escape prosecution in the court of morality’.
