Hearings of the case filed by former Chairman of National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu against Gov. Nasiru El-rufai of Kaduna State and the Police for an order for the enforcement of his fundamental rights resumed on Thursday 23 July, 2020 before the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna.
At the previous court hearings on 7th July, 2020, counsel to Odinkalu, Gloria Ballason, accused the Kaduna State Government through their lawyers of fabrication of documents against Odinkalu, arguing that it was “despicable”.
Responding to this claim at the resumed hearing, respondents’ lawyers, said the evidence they were accused of fabricating was a’ mere irregularity’ that should be overlooked.
Global Rights, an International NGO which was granted leave in the subsisting case as an amicus curiae (i.e friend of the Court) also addresed the court today. In their brief, prepared by former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association and former Chairman of Kenya Human Rights Commission, Chief Maina Kiai, who is an expert in international human rights law.
The presiding Judge, Justice Peter Hoommuk Mallong, adjourned the case to 22nd October, 2020 for judgement.
